Learn how to make this super fun– and tasty– camo treat for an army party or as a tactical gift for him or her!
So my husband’s favorite colors for pretty much everything from watches to jackets to phone cases is usually browns and greens. He says it’s because those colors are “tactical.” Folks, we live in a city. We’ve never been foraging or hunting or anything. So naturally, I tease him (all good-naturedly, of course) about his love for all things tactical.
That’s how these camouflage Oreos came about. In addition to everything tactical, my husband’s other great love is Oreos. Every year for Christmas, I used to always get him some white fudge covered Oreos. But a few years ago, I got the idea to instead make my own “tactical Oreos” for him as a joke.
He thought it was hilarious and LOVED it! So now I make these camouflaged Oreos for him every year.
I always come up with a new slogan to include with it– something like “At last, a cookie you can eat without giving away your position!” or something referencing a movie or show that we like (we both like to insert movie quotes into our conversations and see if the other catches it). For example, one year we were watching a lot of Star Trek TNG (sometimes we’re cool like that 😉 ), so the Tactical Oreo slogan that year was “Cookie cloaking device, ENGAGE!” haha.
So if you have a tactical or Oreo lover in your life, maybe they’d enjoy these, too! They’re really easy to make, not to mention extra tasty –they are chocolate covered Oreos, after all. 😉
How to Make Tactical Oreos
Step 1
You’ll need some white candy melts or white chocolate chips (Hershey’s white chocolate chips are the only ones I’ve found that melt very well), some milk or semisweet chocolate chips, and some dark chocolate chips.
Put all of the different chocolate chips/melts into microwavable bowls and melt them. Only leave the chocolate in the microwave for up to 15 seconds at a time with stirring breaks in between. Chocolate burns easily and there is no saving it once it burns.
Mix a bit of the white chocolate into the milk/semisweet chocolate to make it a lighter brown. Then use food coloring to turn the white chocolate green. I like to add a tiny bit of the regular chocolate to it, too—that makes it more of an earthy “army green” color. Leave the dark chocolate as it is.
Step 2
Now the messy fun part: coating the Oreos in chocolate!
So, as you may imagine, this isn’t really an exact science. Just start with one color and spread/glob it on a couple areas of the cookies. Try not to use a lot of chocolate—just enough for a generous coating.
Then do the same with the next color.
And then the last one! Make sure you filled in the gaps on the sides of the Oreo. The bottom of the Oreo only needs a thin coat of chocolate and I honestly wouldn’t worry about how “camo” it looks.
Once your cookie is all coated, carefully set it down on a sheet pan lined with a silicone mat (if you don’t have one yet, Amazon has a bunch of great and affordable options) or parchment paper.
Step 3
Now smack the sheet pan firmly, but carefully, on the counter. This will cause the chocolates to “fall down” altogether and be smooth. This may also cause any excess chocolate to make a little puddle around your cookie. You can leave it and just trim it off with a knife after the chocolate has set, or you can use a small offset icing spatula (find one here) to carefully lift the cookie out of the puddle before it hardens and move it to a clean section of the sheet pan (my preferred method).
Don’t worry too much about how any one cookie looks—real camo is never really impressive close-up. Having all of the cookies together is what will make these cookies look especially remarkable and fun!
And now you just repeat that process until you run out of cookies or chocolate! Put the pan in the fridge to help the chocolate harden.
And you’re done!
