Make your chocolate chip cookie dough
First, make your favorite chocolate chip cookie dough recipe. This recipe is my favorite. You could definitely use Valentine’s m&ms instead of the chocolate chips (or half m&ms and half chips) if you want to make it more festive.
Shape the cookie dough into hearts
Then press the dough into a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Remove the cookie cutter.
*Tip: if you need a lot of cookies, use a smaller cookie cutter so you can get more out of each batch! I used about a tablespoon of cookie dough to fill my smaller heart cookie cutter and got 58 heart-shaped cookies out of a single batch of chocolate chip cookie dough!
Once I remove the cookie cutter, I like to use my fingers to exaggerate the dip at the top of the heart and the point at the bottom a little bit since the cookies will spread a bit when baking, but you don’t have to. I just did because my cookie cutter is more of a squat heart shape.
Just keep making heart-shaped dough “balls” with the cookie cutter until your sheet pan is full (space the cookies about 2 inches apart on the sheet pan).
Add sprinkles! If you want…
You can bake the cookies according to your recipe’s instructions from here, or you can make them even cuter by adding sprinkles! Which is what I chose to do. 😊
Check out these super cute giant heart sprinkles I used here.
Don’t “sprinkle” the sprinkles on your cookie dough – it won’t work very well that way. Instead, place a few sprinkles on the cookie dough and gently press them into the dough a bit. This does take a smidge longer than just sprinkling the sprinkles, but the cookies will look SO much better this way.
Bake the cookies
Now go ahead and bake the cookies!
I have tried refrigerating the dough “balls” before baking to see if they’d hold their shape better, but it actually didn’t make any difference. The unrefrigerated dough holds its shape surprisingly well, anyway, but I was just curious. 😉
And you’re done! I told you these heart-shaped chocolate chip cookies were easy!
So did your kids use these easy Valentine’s Day treats for school this year? Or for a party? Or maybe you made them simply to treat yourself (you totally deserve it!)? Let me know in the comments!
