Jump to RecipeEveryone knows about biscuits and gravy, but if you’re from the southern US, then you know that chocolate gravy is where it’s at!
Whenever my non-southern friends hear about chocolate gravy, they often seem a bit grossed out at first, to be honest. But then, after I assure them that it’s just a warm chocolaty pudding-like sauce that you eat with biscuits – not an actual gravy made from meat drippings that you’d serve over a pot roast – they’re much more interested, haha!
And who wouldn’t be? Creamy, chocolatey sauce all over some fluffy biscuits… can you think of a better start to your day?!
We had it for part of our dinner a few nights ago, and all day long my daughters were talking about how they couldn’t wait to eat chocolate gravy that night– and then the leftovers for breakfast the next day (they had a plan, haha).
Now my kids are pretty much always excited for food, but getting to eat chocolate for dinner had them even more excited than usual, haha!
Ok, so my husband and I were pretty excited, too. 😉
Let’s get making!

Easy Chocolate Gravy Recipe
First, mix ¼ cup of butter and 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir while the butter melts and for a couple of minutes more so the flour can start to cook.
Stir in ¼ cup of cocoa powder and a pinch of salt. Then whisk in about a third of the sugar (to total 1 cup) alternately with about a third of the milk (to total 1 ¾ cup) until both are all incorporated.
Let the gravy cook until it starts to thicken, stirring every now and then. Be sure to scrape the edges and bottom of the pan. I usually switch back and forth between a whisk and a spatula or wooden spoon at this point so I can make sure nothing gets stuck in the corners of the pot and that everything is mixed really well.
Once the gravy looks like a runny pudding, remove it from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
And that’s it! Serve it over fresh biscuits for a delightful breakfast treat!
