Learn how to make this incredibly easy gingerbread playdough recipe!
Are you — er, your kids — ready for some holiday sensory playtime? This homemade gingerbread playdough is so great for little and big kids, alike!
It’s the softest dough recipe I’ve ever worked with, and the scent is just so fun! Did I mention that it’s also cheap and super easy to make? And comes together in about 5 minutes? And it lasts for months?! Yep, it’s a winner for sure.
I was trying to think of a simple activity to have ready for the little ones at a Christmas get together when I got the idea to make a holiday scented playdough. And it was a HIT! The kids and their parents both loved it.
It also makes a great stocking stuffer, in case you were wondering. 😉
It’s made from basic baking ingredients, so it is technically edible. But even though it smells delightful, I don’t recommend tasting it, haha.
I adapted the original recipe from Allyson over at domesticsuperhero.com for this homemade gingerbread playdough recipe.

Mix all of the dry ingredients
First, stir together 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of salt, 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar, 1 tablespoon of powdered ginger, 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon of ground cloves in a medium saucepan.
Add the wet ingredients
Stir in 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. If you want to color the dough, go ahead and add in any liquid food coloring you want now. You can also knead food coloring in later after the dough is made, but it’s a lot messier that way.
Heat the dough
Now put the pan on the stove and turn the burner to medium-low. Stir the mixture over the heat. It will thicken quickly, but just keep stirring and be sure to scrape the bottom and edges of the pan as you go.
Once the dough doesn’t look wet anymore and starts to form a ball turn off the heat. Take the dough out of the pan so it can cool.
Once it’s cooled, knead it a few times. Isn’t it the softest play dough you’ve ever felt?!
And it’s ready to play with!
When you’re finished playing with your fabulous homemade dough, store it in a zip loc bag in the fridge for up to 6 months!
